

Frederick Lee Von Bohland “Fred”, age 78, of Kansas City, Missouri passed away February 16, 2022. He was a graduate of East High School in 1961 and attended Finlay Engineering College in 1962. Fred enlisted in the US Air Force in September of 1962 and received an honorable discharge in September of 1966. After completing Millwright Training, Fred began a 30 year career as a Millwright retiring from General Motors in April of 2006.
Fred met his wife, Barbara Hompertz, when he was stationed at Volk Field, Camp Douglas, Wisconsin in 1965. Fred and Barbara were married May 27, 1967 and started their married life together in Independence, Missouri. Fred and Barbara welcomed their oldest daughter, Cathy, in May of 1971 and their middle daughter, Jennifer, in October of 1972. Fred and Barbara’s youngest daughter, Mary, was born in January of 1977.
Fred was a nature-lover and enjoyed weekends and summers camping, fishing and boating at Pomme De Terre Lake. Fred was an avid bowler, a great athlete in his prime, and was known for pulling pranks on friends and coworkers. Fred also had a great love of cars that began in childhood with him restoring vintage cars with his father. Fred was also a true family man spending all his free time with his family either coaching a daughter’s basketball team or attending his grandchildren’s basketball, soccer, or volleyball games. After retirement, Fred had the opportunity to join the Knights of Columbus and American Legion and often attended mass at St. Bernadette’s. Fred was an exceptional husband, father, son, and friend. Fred will be forever in the hearts of those who love him.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Juanita Von Bohland. Fred leaves behind his wife and the love of his life Barbara Von Bohland; his daughter Cathy Shevlin (Joel Shevlin); his daughter Jennifer Von Bohland (Mike Rinehart), his daughter Mary Von Bohland-Rau (Chad Rau); and his grandchildren: Cole Rinehart, Chase Rinehart, Sophia Rau, Vaughn Rau, and Brady Rau. Fred also leaves behind his sister, Linda Blankenbiller, and her sons Mark Ferrin and David Ferrin.
Visitation will be held at Newcomer’s Floral Hills Funeral Home in Kansas City, Missouri on Thursday, February 24, 2022 from 5:00pm-7:00pm. Funeral Services will held at the same location on Friday, February 25, 2022 at 10:00am with graveside services immediately following. Please join the family for Fred’s Celebration of Life.
