When I think about dad, I think about all he's taught me over the years--from fishing, learning to ride a bike and driving. I think about time spent working on math at the dining room table, weekends camping with the family and evenings playing cribbage.  I have fond memories of being walked down the aisle, spending holidays together and knowing that he was always right next door for anything that we needed. He taught me about hard work, loyalty, commitment and never giving up. On a lighter note, I finally understand how he could drink coffee all day even on a hot summer day. He will be forever missed. 

I have known the VonBohland's since I was 13 years old when Jenny and I became close friends. I have so many fond memories of spending time at the VonBohland house growing up. Fred and Barb were always so welcoming and treated me like family.

Most of the time when I pulled up to their house, I was greeted by Fred and Honeybear (their massive Chow). Fred was usually tinkering in the garage and would peek his head out to say hello. Honey usually tailed me all the way to the back door - always on guard.
 
One of my fondest memories of Fred is when he shared his love for the lake and camping with me. Fred taught me about real camping - the roaring camp fire, sleeping bags and tents. He took me on my first campout and I have enjoyed it ever since.

Fred always had a sense of humor. Although, he often kept a very straight face and I couldn't always tell if he was being serious or joking with me. But then he would crack a smile to let me know he was kidding. 

I also remember that Fred was always taking care of the girls' cars to make sure they were running well. One time when Jenny and I were in college she got a flat tire. Since we were in Liberty at William Jewell she was worried about calling her dad to drive so far way. We decided that we were going to change that tire ourselves.  And we did - completely on our own, even declining when an older man stopped to offer assistance. I remember Jenny saying her dad was going to be so proud of us. 

One thing I know for certain is that Fred loved his family more than anything and he worked extremely hard to make sure they had the best opportunities in life.  He and Barb truly loved each other and he was always so proud of Cathy, Jenny and Mary. He will continue to beam with pride as he watches over them.

This is a day that all children know will come. We try not to think about it, but the thought is simply there….. lingering in the back of our mind. The day we have to say “Goodbye” to our dad. 

My dad’s experiences, knowledge, and quite frankly expertise in what seemed like EVERY SINGLE THING had been the touchstone of my childhood but grew even more important to me as I became an adult. Before I ventured into many big purchases, like buying a car, or before I started a home project….my first thought would be “What would dad do?” or “What does dad think?” To the amusement and occasionally even the frustration of my husband, the thought would often turn to “We better ask my dad before we get started.” 

The level of trust and respect I had for my dad is truly difficult to put into words. If my dad said something “would work” or the purchase or task was “a good idea,” then that was my TRUTH. Because after all, my dad would not be wrong. I am not sure I can count how many times I started a sentence with, “I better call and ask my dad," and there he would be, on the phone, with his deep yet quiet voice providing me what I needed…Every. Single. Time. He gave of his skills, his love, and his support whenever he was asked…without question. 

Although my dad will no longer be “just a phone call away,” I know I will not stop asking the question “What would dad do?” Perhaps his voice will be quieter and a bit more distant, but he will still be there. Every. Single. Time.  


We met Fred through his wife Barb who was a Camp Fire Girls leader.  Seems that everyone  knew Fred at GM. He always had his hat on. Everybody must have many fond memories of their own. Those are something that no one can take away.  Life is something to savor everyday and  not to be taken for granted. So, let's all make the most of it. Be kind, giving and helpful to others that you meet along the path of life.

Uncle Fred is an example of how to do life right.  A straight shooter I always knew where he was coming from.   I will  miss conversations with him that were always peppered with humor and a positive take.  

Growing up the holidays at uncle Fred and aunt Barb's are warm memories, something I always looked forward to.   Summer time camping trips were never long enough.  
He with aunt Barb raised my awesome cousins Cathy,  Jenny, and Mary.  Each one successful, happy people. 
What a tremendous legacy.
