

Garnet Louise (Phelps) Hood passed away July 11, 2017 at age 98 having had a life filled with love and family. She was an Oklahoma girl born in Commerce, July 7, 1919, to Val and May (Butler) Phelps. She had three brothers Reed, Herb, and Hal and two sisters Charlotte and Florence.
Garnet worked in the KC bindery industry. There she met Howard Russell Hood in Kansas City where she had moved with her family and they were married ten days after the Pearl Harbor attack. They eloped and were married in Olathe, KS. Howard left in January, 1942, training as a medic and did not return from the Pacific Theater until 1945. Howard and Garnet were married for 43 years until Howard’s death in 1984.
Garnet is survived by three sons Kenneth (Maggie), James (Bridget) and Dennis. She has seven grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandsons, as well as many nieces and nephews on both sides of the family over the course of her life and greatly loved them all. She was blessed with a warm manner and a wonderful, charming sense of humor.
She has maintained a sense with her Lord and is now resting in His arms.
Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 a.m. followed by funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 15, at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Rd. Burial in Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
