Gayle was born on Christmas day, 1934 in Valmeyer, Illinois, near St. Louis. While working in the nearby town of Waterloo in her late teens, she met her future husband, Luther Holland. They were married in 1954 and soon relocated to Ravenna, Ohio, for a brief time when Luther took a job there. Mom and Dad moved again in 1957 when Luther was transferred to the Kansas City area, and the couple eventually settled in Raytown to raise a daughter and two sons and remained married for nearly 56 years until Luther’s passing in 2010. Gayle has been Worthy Matron in the Order of the Eastern Star, a number of Star Points, and Representative for Indiana at Grand Chapter. She volunteered at the OES Western Missouri Nursing home for over ten years, where she learned a new hobby in painting ceramics. Eastern Star recently honored her for her 50th year of service with them. She was also active in Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts with her children during the ’60s and ‘70s. Gayle was a lifelong baseball fan, first following her beloved St. Louis Cardinals and Browns in her youth, and later the Kansas City A’s and Royals. She also enjoyed following college basketball, particularly the Missouri Tigers, along with Kansas City Chiefs football. Among her hobbies and favorite things in life were flowers (tulips especially), Mickey Mouse, the “Lawrence Welk Show”, crocheting/sewing/needlepoint, “Little House On The Prairie”, Cardinals (the birds), and collecting decorative salt-and-pepper shakers. The newest Angel in the Outfield will be missed by her great grandson, Kirin, grandchildren Ashley, Andrew , Nathan, and Josh , their spouses Josh, Jamie, and Cara, children Brian, Renee, and her husband Gary, family and friends. Please don’t send flowers, they make us sneeze, instead to honor Mom , consider planting some tulips and making a donation to your favorite charity in her name.
