Georgia was the sixth and youngest daughter of seventeen (17) children born to John Scott Phillips and Georgia Lavone (Hill) Phillips. Born in Maryville, Missouri, June 11, 1922, but raised from the age of about 8 on a farm southeast of Waverly, Kansas. In a booklet mother prepared for us she wrote: “We moved furniture and part of the family in a stock truck with myself and sister and two brothers in the back of the truck on top of the furniture. That new home turned out to be where I grew up. I went to a little country school, to which we walked two miles unless the snow was too deep, and then we rode a wagon drawn by two horses.” This account took place during the “Great Depression”.
Georgia went to high school in Burlington, Kansas during the week and then returned home for the weekend (a brother brought her to school Monday then returned to pick her up on Friday). Her dad wanted a schoolteacher in the family and Georgia was his last chance. She graduated from high school, then started teaching high school. This didn’t last very long as the boys in class kept flirting with her.
She met Leo Raymond Beeson in Burlington. (He asked her brother for permission to date her.) They were married September 17, 1941, in Garnett, Kansas.
Georgia worked as a cafeteria manager in the Hickman Mills School District. She was active In the American Legion Auxiliary, Hickman Mills Post 598 and the VFW Auxiliary and was an active member of Red Bridge Baptist Church
Georgia is survived by Leona England (Paul), Raymond Beeson (Linda), John Beeson (Barbara), and Larry Beeson (Carolyn), 11 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and 9 great great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Leo Beeson, granddaughter, Karen (England) Lundy and grandson, David Harris.
A Visitation will take place from 12:00pm to 1:00pm followed by a Funeral Service for Georgia at 1:00pm on Tuesday, December 7 at Red Bridge Baptist Church, 4901 East Red Bridge Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64137. Burial will follow in Mount Moriah Cemetery South.
