Georgia Lee Thomas, 94, passed away peacefully on May 13 th , surrounded by friends and family. Georgia was born on September 1, 1930, in Schulte, Kansas to her loving parents John Benjamin and Dorothy Becker (from Illinois). She grew up on a farm with her eight siblings.
Georgia’s professional roots were inspired at the all-girls Sacred Heart Academy, Class of 1948. She began teaching in 1950 in her home state of Kansas. She followed her dreams and attended Central Missouri State College, where she earned a master’s degree in teaching. She devoted her 28-year teaching profession to St. Charles Borromeo School (1967-1995), then continued substitute teaching for the NKC School District, developing young minds and making more lasting friendships and impressions then anybody could ever imagine. With an impressive 50+ years of teaching, everywhere Georgia went, she was known, greeted, and recognized by her students, parents, colleagues, and friends.
In 1952, Georgia married Bill Thomas (widowed in 1999), whom she would have six beautiful children with: Alan, David, Donald, Kevin, Lori, and Cheryl. Bill accepted a position with TWA and moved the family to Kansas City in 1964. Georgia’s strength was tested through the loss of her children: Donald at the age of 18 months, Cheryl in 2014, and David in 2018, but her faith never wavered.
Georgia’s hobbies included painting, sewing, scrabble, playing cards (and winning), traveling the world, watching her beloved KC Royals, and being the proud member of 9+ clubs. She was devoted to her family, friends, and The Church. Her commitment to The Holy Spirit surpassed all expectations.
Georgia is survived by her sister Dolores Staats (of Seattle), children Alan Thomas, Kevin Thomas, and Lori Thomas, 12 Grandchildren, 18 Great-grandchildren, and many loving nieces and nephews.
We would like to thank the special people who cared for this marvelous woman at the end of her adventure, allowing her many family and friends to be with her and support her in her final days. It really meant the world to her and to us!
In lieu of flowers, we request that donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. www.stjude.org
