After his lung disease rapidly progressed, Gerry came to San Diego earlier this year to be with family. He passed away on June 14 with those he loved at his side.
Gerry was born in Poteau, OK on Aug. 3, 1950 to Jack and Reta Duncan. He was the youngest of three boys (brothers Norris and Bob). After graduating from Heavener High School and attending college at Oklahoma State University, the son of a railroad engineer created his own path to become a software engineer when he relocated to Kansas City, MO.
Six months after meeting the love of his life, Patricia “Pat” Woolsey, they were married in 1976 in Kansas City. Their son, Matthew, made their family whole in 1981. Beloved dogs were also central to their lives, with Bo being Gerry’s cherished last pet.
Gerry and Pat are remembered as spectacular hosts, welcoming family and friends to their home in Independence for holidays and events, especially themed Halloween parties. They spent summer weekends at the Lake of the Ozarks, where the family cabin was a hub for boating, skiing, and cookouts for their many guests.
In 2013, Gerry became “Gman” to his grandson, Miles, son of Matt and Amanda. He quickly shared his love for boating, NASCAR, and most importantly - fun!
The highlights of Gerry’s professional career were at Cerner, where he retired with 30+ years of service in 2014. He worked alongside and mentored hundreds of people who have just as many stories about his dedication, humor, and antics. Alongside being an accomplished professional, Gerry was also an extraordinaire at fixing, building, or outright transforming homes to realize the dreams of his wife and family.
Gerry was dedicated to improving the lives of those around him. Over the years, he shared his stellar cooking skills, donated to teachers and schools, adopted families for Christmas, and spontaneously helped neighbors. To continue his legacy, please give to someone or something meaningful to you.
A celebration of life will be held in Kansas City on Aug. 1. For more information, please contact the family.
