Geri was born Geraldine Rose Huerter to Edward and Madeline Huerter in Axtel, Kansas. She was raised on the family farm and later in Seneca, Kansas. She continued to own and manage her farm from Kansas City throughout her life and always maintained her connections to Seneca. She attended Saint Michael's Country School in Axtell, Kansas, Sacred Heart School in Baileyville, Kansas, and Saint Peter and Paul High School in Seneca. After attending St. Mary's College and Providence Nursing School, she practiced as a Nurse at the Seneca Hospital, Providence Hospital, in Reno Nevada while Joe was serving in the Air Force after he returned from the Korean War, and for 27 years at North Kansas City Hospital. Geri married Joe Schumacher in 1952, and they raised their children in Kansas City while being involved at St. Patrick's Church and Saint Pius X High School. The family was always involved and busy with family, friends, church, sports, music, Scouts, and fun. Family trips were well planned and full of adventures. Geri continued to be very involved at St. Patrick's Church attending daily Mass and often daily breakfast with her friends. She volunteered at St. Patrick's School and Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, Don Bosco Center, Bishop Sullivan Center, and was an auxiliary member of Our Lady of Mercy Country Home. Her long membership in the Ancient Order of Hibernian Society kept her Irish heritage alive and guaranteed her a spot on the trolley at the Saint Patrick's Day parade every March.
Traveling about the world with close friends brought Geri much happiness. She had special memories of Ireland, the Holy Land, and many other destinations. It was always clear to Geri that Faith, family, and friends were what mattered most in life. She was loved by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and all that knew her. Her kindness, sense of humor, smile and laughter were an attraction to many. She knew how to keep life simple and uncomplicated. Her favorite color was red, her favorite flower was a rose, and she always loved spring and all the birds that would visit her yard. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe (deceased 1980), and her beloved parents, Ed and Madeline. Reuniting with them will be a joyous occasion. She is survived by sons Ed (MaryKay), Jim (Trish) and daughter, Mary Whitaker (Ted), 10 grandchildren, David, Sarah, Jean, Samantha, Joe, Lauren, Todd, Beth, Jordan, Andrew, and 14 great grandchildren.
The family would like to express our sincere appreciation to the caregivers at Curana Health, North Kansas City Hospital, Our Lady of Mercy Country Home, Norterre Estoria, and Ascend Hospice.
