A Celebration of Life will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday, January 9th, 2023, at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer and Freeman Funeral Home in Kansas City, Missouri. Afterward a catered reception will occur at American Legion, 6521 Nieman Road, Shawnee, Kansas 66203.
Gilbert was born in El Paso, Texas on August 30, 1957, to José Guadalupe Cantu and Carmen Ramirez Cantu.
He attended Westport High School in Kansas City, Missouri.
Shortly after high school he served in the United States Army from 1976 to 1982 in the 82nd Infantry as a parachutist.
He worked as a technician for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union 124 for 14 years and retired in 2006 from DH Pace. He was also a black belt in taekwondo and an instructor.
His interests included horseback riding, camping, traveling, watching western movies, listening to country music and spending quality time with his family.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his father Jose Guadalupe Cantu and a nephew, Jose Matias Cantu.
He is survived by two sons, Gilbert Roland (Melissa) Cantu, Jr., Dominic Nicholas (Jaime) Cantu; and one daughter, Sara Irene Cantu; mother, Carmen R. Cantu; six siblings along with eight grandchildren who miss him dearly.
He leaves behind many family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
