Gladys was born on June 22, 1922, in Fort Worth, Texas. Her family moved to Johnson County, KS, during her early childhood. She graduated from Shawnee Mission Rural High school (which later became Shawnee Mission North). She married George Bartholow in 1944 during World War II and traveled with him while he attended several military schools. Together they built a family with two sons in Prairie Village, Kansas, and later moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, and Orinda, California. After returning to Kansas, they started Bartholow Office Supply and, as it expanded to multiple locations, were joined by their sons in the business.
Gladys was a cheerful and vivacious woman who enjoyed celebrations. She loved to look her best and was an expert at accessorizing. She enjoyed classical music, reading, and traveling overseas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret Irene (Tate) Leverett and Gus Beryl Leverett; husband, George Bartholow; son, Brent Bartholow; and daughter-in-law Victoria (Wallace) Bartholow. She is survived by her son Martin Bartholow (Cathy)of Olathe, KS: daughter-in-law Betty Caster Bartholow of Belton, MO; grandchildren Karen Bartholow Hillison (Michael) of Portland, OR; Laura Bartholow Ryan (Tim) of Olathe, KS; Michelle Bartholow Dunham (Seth) of Overland Park, KS; Jonni Ruffin (Anthony) of Altadena, CA; and Casey Bartholow (LaShell) of Georgetown, TX. Four great-grandchildren also survive her.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Samaritan's Purse's relief work in Ukraine.
