Harold David Bridges was born in Portland, MO on January 13, 1927 to Naomi Boone Bridges and Andrew David Bridges. The doctor for his delivery was his own grandfather, Dr. Andrew Bridges. Harold grew up with his sister, Kathleen, who was just 2 years older.
Portland was a great place for a young boy to live, as there were endless opportunities to hunt and fish. Harold worked at a service station, and later, on the railroad. During his Senior year of High School in Mokane, MO when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Harold enlisted in the Navy as soon as he was able, serving two years before his honorable discharge.
After the Navy, Harold attended the University of Missouri at Columbia. While there, he worked summers in Kansas City, near his sister. Eventually, he began working at Armco Steel, where he obtained more schooling, becoming a Roll Designer Engineer. He had a long and happy career there, working 44 years before retiring in 1993. During his years at Armco, he enjoyed playing golf and bowling with company teams. He enjoyed volunteering at church, mowing grass and other yard work, growing tomatoes, and other projects.
Harold married Bonnie Zumsteg on October 13, 1951 and they moved to Independence, MO. Together they have a son, Steven Bridges (April) of Waterloo, IA; a daughter, Jill Bridges of Independence, MO; two grandsons, Jason Bridges (Timm) of Munich, Germany and Jonathan Bridges of Waterloo, IA; one great granddaughter, Kathleen Bridges of Waterloo, IA.
Harold and Bonnie had a good friend who was a builder. He convinced them to build a house with his help. They moved into that house when Steven was 4 years old, 64 years ago, and it has been their home ever since. Both Harold and Bonnie enjoyed gardening, flowers and maintaining a well-manicured lawn.
