Harold Dean Dunkak, 95, ended his life journey on Saturday, June 13, 2015. Harold was born in Nebraska on October 25, 1919, the son of Louise Zimbelman and Henry Dunkak. The family soon moved to Dallas, South Dakota where he spent his youth. Harold loved farming, collecting arrowheads, and tinkering with farm trucks and tractors.
Harold enlisted in the Army on November 4, 1941. He served until October 26, 1945. During this time he participated in the D-Day landings at Utah Beach and later received the Bronze Star for his service.
Harold married June Boice on September 28, 1946. They enjoyed almost 69 years of marriage.
Harold worked for Kansas City Streetcar maintenance after his military service until he started his career at TWA where he was employed over 34 years. Harold and June built many homes together before settling at Weatherby Lake for over 30 years.
Harold and June traveled through Europe. They always said, “Go while you still can,” and they lived up to that motto, taking over 24 trips overseas.
Harold was universally known as a kind-hearted man who would help anyone in need. Despite a rough childhood and four years of service in World War II, he remained true to self. Perhaps because of his hardscrabble youth, he was a sharp dresser and very detail-oriented. It was once said that Harold owned every tool known to man and had a spot to store each one.
Harold is survived by his wife June of Kansas City, Missouri and sister Pearle Janus of South Dakota.
Graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 17 at Mt. Moriah Cemetery, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri.
