Harold Mitchell Knabe, 75, of Weston, MO died April 20, 2013 at North Kansas City Hospital. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, April 24 at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, MO. Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, April 25 at the funeral home. Entombment in the Garden Mausoleum at Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
Harold was born April 12, 1938 in Booneville, MO to Herman and Dorothy (Mitchell) Knabe. At the age of two, his family moved to Kansas City and lived in the Northeast Area. Harold joined the KCMO Fire Department in 1960 and retired in 1992 as the Public Information Officer. He was the trusted face and voice of the Kansas City Fire Department. Harold was extremely proud of the fire safety educational programs he implemented as well as his significant role in establishing the Firefighters Memorial Fountain.
He is preceded in death by his brothers Herman David, Walter (W.O.), James (Bobby) and Donald. He is survived by his wife, Kari (Kesler) Knabe; two daughters from his marriage to Janet Harbert, Pamela Hanser and Jodi Gilbreth; grandchildren Ryan (Kristin), Kaylee, Ashlee, and Ian Gilbreth; a great-granddaughter, Harper “Peanut” Monroe Gilbreth; a brother, Richard Knabe; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
