Harriet Marie Nelson

On June 1, 1969, Harriet married Kenny Nelson. Together they built a life centered on family, sharing more than 57 years of marriage. She was a lifelong member at Gregory Boulevard Church of Christ.

Harriet was a devoted homemaker while raising her children before beginning a career in retail. She worked many years at The Jones Store at Blue Ridge Mall, then later Macy’s at Independence Center and Joann.

Harriet loved all things sewing, buttons, quilting, and collecting teapots. She was a great baker and known for her highly-requested Christmas cookies and cinnamon rolls. One of Harriet’s greatest joys was being “Mamu” to her grandkids. She treasured the time she spent with them and loved watching them grow.

Harriet is survived by her husband, Kenny Nelson; her daughter, Dorinda “Rindy” Leighter of Harrisonville; her son, Greg Nelson and his partner, Chris Coldoff, of Minden, NV; her grandchildren, Bailey Leighter of Raymore and Daniel Leighter of Lompoc, CA; her sister, Barbara Rookstool; and her brother, John Rookstool. She was preceded in death by her parents, Owen and Lovie Rookstool.

A visitation will be held at Floral Hills Funeral Home and Cemetery, 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64133, on June 24, 2026, from 9:00 am to 10:00 am, followed by a funeral service at the same location on June 24, 2026, from 10:00 am to 10:30 am.
