Harry Gilbert Thompson Jr (Shorty) born 2-28-1923 passed away peacefully on June 13th, 2019 surrounded by family, he was 96. Shorty was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Mildred Thompson, two brothers, Clarence (Tom), Albert, and his sister Enid.
Shorty was born in Kansas City, Kansas where he lived until he joined the Navy Seabees and served in the South West Pacific during WW2. When the war was over, Shorty returned home and began working for the Union Pacific Railroad where he would work for over 40 years as a Carman. As young men, Shorty and his brother Tom enjoyed racing motorcycles and raced on some of the original dirt tracks around Kansas City.
Shorty remained an avid motorcyclist well into his 80s. Shorty retired from the Union Pacific Railroad in 1983 but continued to work for several years at various jobs or whatever he wanted to work on. He and his wife Bonnie loved to camp and square dance with their family and friends. They traveled extensively and spent many winters in Arizona.
Shorty leaves behind Bonnie, his loving wife of 50 years, two children, Sandra Iennaccaro and John Thompson and four stepchildren, Rick Mayville, Paul Mayville, Robin Rockhold, and Steve Mayville. Many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Shorty loved to be around people and people loved to be around Shorty. He had a quick wit that he entertained with until the very end.
