Harry Weiss, 98, was born on August 7, 1926 in Saint Nazaire, France before coming to the United States with his parents Meyer and Julia Weiss. He lived in Kansas City Missouri the majority of his life.
When he was 17 years old with his mother signing for him, he enlisted in the US Navy. He served in World War II from 1944 to 1945 aboard the USS Missouri battleship. He then re-enlisted and served in the Korean War from 1949 to 1952 on the Salinas and Macon ships.
After a honorable discharge he came back to Kansas City and worked as a motorcycle mechanic before learning the trade of drywall which he did for 35 years.
Because of Harry’s passion for the Navy and his friendship with fellow shipmates all over the country, he belonged to the USS Missouri Battleship Association, and served as the Midwest Corresponding Secretary. He was also a member of the American Battleship Association.
After retiring, Harry moved to Warsaw, Missouri. Even though he was retired, he volunteered at the Lost Valley Hatchery, a part of the Missouri Conservation. He enjoyed his time at the hatchery, teaching children and people about fishing, getting fishing poles ready for kids fishing day, making bird houses and spending time with his “girls”. Harry was honored there for volunteering over 5000 hours. His retirement also allowed him to be in parades and car shows with his two Mustangs. He called one of them his “Red Head”.
Harry had a love for his family, hunting, fishing, camping, many hours on his pontoon boat, planting flowers and watching birds, especially hummingbirds.
Harry’s survivors include his children Charles (Janice) Weiss, Frank (Tenna) Weiss and Rona Murphy. His 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren. Also many friends close and afar.
He is proceeded in death by Mary Lee Weiss his wife; Meyer and Julia Weiss his parents; Joshua Murphy his grandson; Marty Raffurty a special friend; two brothers and three sisters; Tuffy, his much loved pet.
