Helen was born on August 30, 1935, to Claude and Susie Lewis. She grew up in the Fairmount area, where she developed the resilience, kindness, and love of family that remained with her throughout her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both of her husbands; her beloved son, Wayne; her eleven brothers and sisters; and many cherished nieces and nephews.
Helen was first married to Elvin Wayne Gardner Sr., Dec 27 1952 and together they welcomed three sons: Wayne Jr., Edward, and Eugene. She later married Chris Locke, and together they made their home on the Farm in Kansas City, where they raised a variety of animals and enjoyed a life centered on family and the simple pleasures.
A gifted homemaker and talented crafter, Helen loved cross-stitching, crocheting, and painting on wood. She proudly sold many of her handmade creations at local craft fairs. She also found great joy in tending her vegetable garden and flower beds, always happy to share the fruits of her labor with family and friends.
Helen’s home was a place of comfort and welcome. Anyone who stopped by was likely to be greeted with sweet tea, warm chocolate chip cookies, or her beloved zucchini bread. She was known for her loud voice, warm smile, her occasional glass of Crown Royal, and evenings spent enjoying popcorn. It was the little things that made time with Helen so memorable.
To her grandchildren, Helen was much more than a grandmother. She was a best friend, a trusted source of wisdom, and the keeper of countless family stories. She had a way of making everyone feel heard, loved, and at home, leaving each person with a little more laughter and a little more perspective than when they arrived.
Helen is survived by her sons, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many extended family members and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.
Helen’s legacy is one of generosity, creativity, and unconditional love. She will be remembered for the home she built, the traditions she created, and the countless lives she touched with her kindness. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know and love her.
