Hank was born to Henry and Mary Sumpter, growing up in Wichita. After graduating from East High School, he enlisted into the United States Navy. His service was spent in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign, while aboard the U.S.S. West Virginia.
He completed his education at Wichita State University with a BS in Business Administration. During his last semester he married his life partner Edna Richardson on December 27, 1949. Hank dedicated himself to a career in the flour milling industry. His employment with Consolidated Milling (Wichita) led to an advancement to VP and general manager of Consolidated Division of Seaboard Allied Milling (Kansas City). He retired after a 45 year history as VP Cargill (Kansas City).
Hank’s true passion was with his interest in hunting and fishing, belonging to the Society of Piscators, International Safari Club and Ducks Unlimited. He and Eddie were able to travel on numerous hunting and fishing expeditions acquiring their extensive trophy collection.
Hank was actively involved with the Masonic Lodge completing his 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner from the Sunflower Lodge # 86 Wichita, Kansas. He joined Kansas City Court 54 of the Royal Order of Jesters, serving as Impresario and Court Director in 1992.
He was an active participant in the lives of his children and grandchildren enjoying trips to the ‘farm’, sports and scouting.
He was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Mary, son Matthew and son-in-law Pete Horacek. Surviving members include his wife of 73 years, Edna, son Michael and wife Janet, daughters Mary Horacek, Marnie Giles and daughter-in-law Rebecca Sumpter Rader. He also leaves behind 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on January 5th, 2023 at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home to Include full Military Honors and a Rose Ceremony to be performed by the Royal Orders of Jesters.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Hank’s name to Shriners Children Hospital, Lovetotherescue.org
