Hilda Jean (Ducey) Nitschke was born June 28, 1926, in Ottawa, Ohio, to Clara and Maurice Ducey. She was the last surviving of nine children. She moved to Toledo, Ohio, in 1944 to work in the cafeteria at Spicer Manufacturing Co during the war. There she met her future husband, Herman Nitschke Jr. They were married in 1945 and celebrated 59 years together before his passing.
Herman and Hilda both worked for the Toledo Public Schools until their retirements. They adopted son Mark in 1954 and daughter Debra in 1956. They loved camping with their children, hosting parties for extended family get-togethers, playing cards and visiting with their grandchildren.
Hilda was an excellent cook and baker and would have cookies and snacks whenever anyone visited. She would take cookies to the doctor’s office for Herman’s many visits and his doctors would look forward to her treats. She was generous and giving.
Hilda suffered with Alzheimer’s/Dementia for the last 4 years of her life. She moved to be in her son-in-law and daughter’s care in 2013 in Overland Park Kansas but always wanted to return to her friends and family in Toledo. We will miss her dearly but she is now whole with her husband and son, and at peace.
Surviving are her daughter, Debra (Keith) Hohly of Overland Park, KS; her three grandchildren, Ben of Kansas City, KS, Bethany (Denny) DePugh of Kansas City, MO and Danielle (fiancé Travis Everett) of Seattle, WA. She also had one great-grandson, Henry DePugh.
