Funeral Services will be Friday at McGilley Memorial Chapel, 12301 State Line, Kansas City, MO. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. followed by services at 11 a.m. Private burial will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF.org).
Howard was born Dec. 12, 1922 in Kansas City, KS, to Lee and Mayme Bea Jeter. He spent his childhood in Hannibal. He married Pauline Rockwell in 1946. Pauline preceded him in death, passing away in 2006.
Howard served in the US Marine Corp from 1942 to 1945, spending 37 months in the South Pacific. After the war, he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad until his retirement in 1980. During that time, he became involved in the Union Pacific Credit Union and in 1963 was elected manager of the credit union in Kansas City, KS. He became active in state and national credit union matters. He served on the Kansas Credit Union League Board of Directors and was chairman from 1973-1976; served on the board of the Kansas Corporate Credit Union and was chairman for three years; served on the board of the Credit Union National Association; was a member of the Credit Union Executives Society and served as its chairman from 1980-82. He was involved in credit union government affairs and during this time and advocated on behalf of credit unions and their members.
After retirement from credit union matters, he was an active golfer and served as president of the Kansas Public Links Senior League.
Following Pauline’s death, he lived at Kingswood Senior Living Community in Kansas City where he was involved in organizing activities that benefitted other residents. He received the Pioneer Spirit Award in 2009 from Kingswood in recognition of his efforts.
He is survived by daughter and son in law, Pam and Tom Slaughter; granddaughter Kelly Collins and her husband, Mike; grandson Tom Slaughter, Jr.; and three great-grandchildren. Please share a memory at www.mcgilleystatelinechapel.com.
