Jack Richard Gibbs

Jack Richard Gibbs, 68, Prairie Village, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, March 9, 2010. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 12, at Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 7023 W. 71st Street, Overland Park, Kansas. Private burial in Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Rosary at 6:00 p.m., Thursday, March 11, at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road. Memorial contributions may be made to Bishop Ward High School, 708 N. 18th Street, Kansas City, Kansas 66102. Jack was born December 25, 1941 in Denver, Colorado. He graduated from Bishop Ward High School in 1959. He was married to Carolyn (Barker) Gibbs for 47 years. He was a United States Marine Corps veteran, having served in the Vietnam War. Jack graduated from UMKC with a Masters degree in Business in 1972. He worked for General Motors, retiring after 31 years. He taught business courses part-time at Penn Valley Community College. After retirement Jack continued doing contract work in the automotive industry. He later went to work for Fed Ex, while employed there he was honored with the Missouri’s Older Worker of the Year Award in 2003. Jack enjoyed traveling cooking and Bar-B-Que. He has been a member of the Kansas City Barbeque Society since 2001 and enjoyed judging, reping (ram-roding) and cooking in contests. Jack loved his BBQ family. He was preceded in death by his father Oscar Gibbs and sisters Jean Gibbs, Joan Hess and Janet Hinz. Jack is survived by his mother Marie McCarty, wife Carolyn Gibbs, son and daughter-in-law Jeff and Amy Gibbs, daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and Chad Stewart, granddaughters Ella Stewart and Isabel Gibbs, sister Susan Bearce , and brothers Jim McCarty and Richard Gibbs.
