He received his Bachelor of Science and Master's Degree in Education from Central Missouri State University. He was a teacher and a principal for the Kansas City School System from 1954-1993, when he retired. James was a member of Eastgate Christian Church, in Independence, MO where he served at Elder Emeritus; Kansas City Associates of School Retirees; and Retired Teacher's Association of Missouri.
He is survived by children Michael Summers and wife Linda; Sandra Hanaway and husband David; five grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. He also was survived by his brother Charles Garvin, of Warsaw, MO, who passed away just a few days after James.
