Janet Joan Hanninen Martin went to be with our Lord at the age of 89 years on January 8, 2020. She looked forwarded to joining her beloved husband Lee William Martin in heaven. They had celebrated 60 years of marriage before his death in 2017. She was also preceded in death by her parents Maria Manni Hanninen and Konstu Hanninen, her two sisters Bertha Hanninen Kinninen and Martha Hanninen Siedel, her three brothers Reino, Marcus (Sparky), and Wilbert Hanninen, and a grand-daughter Jamie Ann Martin.

She is survived by her children and stepchildren and their families: Marianna Leigh Martin Sockrider (husband Howard and daughter Laura Leigh Sockrider); Craig Robert Martin (wife Kathleen (Sissy) and children Rachel Eileen Martin Eikenberry, Kyle Christian Martin, Adam Thomas Martin; Brian Konstu Martin; Dayna Marie Martin (sons Matthew Dean McDonald, Martin Dion Luke McDonald); Michael Lee Martin (wife Donna and children Laurie Michelle Martin, Jodie Lynn Martin)

She and Lee were blessed with eleven great-grandchildren (Abella Martin, Brody Martin, Elex Martin, Stella Eikenberry, Hattie Eikenberry, Benjamin Eikenberry, Sofia Schulze, Michael Schulze, AnnaMarie McDonald, Madison McDonald, and Beckett McDonald) She is also survived by her nieces in Ely, MN: Linda Hanninen Leiser and Sandy Hanninen Okstad and her brothers-in-law in Kansas City, MO: Gene Martin and Herbert Martin. Janet was born June 7, 1930 in Ely, Minnesota. She graduated from Ely High School and attended a business/secretarial college in Seattle, Washington. She was proud to be a Finnish-American. Both of her parents immigrated from Finland and Finnish was the primary language in her home as a child. She and Lee went to Finland for a large Hanninen family reunion in 1974 and she was very happy to connect with her cousins there. She married Lee in 1957 and resided in Kansas City, Missouri until her husband’s death. They loved sitting on the porch of their Brookside area home. Her last few years were spent at Brookstone Assisted Living in Fayetteville Arkansas near her son Craig and family. She liked to be called Mummo (Finnish for grandma). Her family greatly appreciates the wonderful care she received from all the Brookstone staff. She had a number of jobs over her life. She most enjoyed her last employment with Modern Handcraft Publishing (including Flower and Garden, Workbasket, and Workbench magazines). She really enjoyed cooking and crafts, particularly woodcarving. They always had dogs and she loved them dearly. Janet and Lee were members of Central United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. She sang in the church choir and was an active volunteer at the church in many capacities over the years. One of their most memorable travels was to the Holy Land with the Mather Sunday School class.

A public memorial service and reception celebrating Janet’s life will be held at 10:00 am on January 18, 2020 at Central United Methodist Church, 5144 Oak. Kansas City, MO. A private family graveside gathering will follow. Donations may be made to Central United Methodist Church in her memory. Words of comfort may be shared with the friends and family at FloralHillsFuneralHome.com
