With broken hearts yet comforted by the knowledge that God has eased her earthly suffering, we announce the passing of Janet Marie Roehl on October 12, 2026 at her home in Lee's Summit, Missouri, with her devoted husband, Dennis, by her side, after a long illness.
Born December 31, 1944, in Independence, Missouri, to John D. and Helen (O'Riley) Wilmot. Janet was the youngest of four daughters. Janet attended St. Ann's School and later graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1963.
She met her future husband and best friend, Dennis, while working at Vendo. They married on December 31, 1966, and shared nearly 60 years of love, faith, and devotion, building a life centered on family and service.
Janet was a loving wife, devoted mother, loving "Nana," and faithful friend. She put aside her banking career to raise cherished daughters Sara and Ann. Her greatest joy was her family, especially the daily time spent caring for and nurturing her grandchildren.
A woman of deep Catholic faith, Janet quietly lived the Gospel through kindness, humility, and service. She answered God's call to service by volunteering at previous parish St. Bernadettes (Parish Council Secretary, Christian Family Movement, Co-Leader for Young Marrieds and Engaged Couples), Bishop Sullivan Center (Delivered produce and fruit to St. James, Serving meals to the homeless at St. James), Lee's Summit Social Services (Delivered Eggs and Delivered Bread and Pastries), and in various ministries at their parish, including with the St. Joseph Guild as Treasurer and as a traveling eucharistic minister, always serving others with grace and compassion.
Janet loved gardening, reading, collecting teapots, and, famously, mincemeat pie. She made everyone feel special through her genuine interest in their lives and her unwavering love.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Sue Ann Wilmot and Mary Kathryn Boutross; and brothers-in-law James Boutross, Robert Hammer and Tom Northrup.
Janet is survived by her beloved husband and best friend of nearly 60 years, Dennis; daughters Sara Shanahan (Sean) and Ann Roehl (John); granddaughters Allison Hilboldt (Michael), Natalie Seck, and Grace Shanahan; great-grandchildren Clara and Francis Hilboldt; sister Helen "DeeDee" Hammer; and sister-in-law Kathleen Northrup.
Services will be held on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at Our Lady of the Presentation Catholic Church, 130 NW Murray Road, Lee’s Summit, MO 64081. A Rosary will take place at 9:15am with Visitation taking place from 9:30am-10:30am, followed immediately by a funeral Mass at 10:30am. Burial immediately following at Mount Olivet in Raytown. A luncheon for family and friends immediately following burial.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Bishop Sullivan Center or Lee's Summit Social Services.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers from Home Instead, the staff of Ascend Hospice, and especially daughter Ann and son-in-law Sean, whose loving and faithful care brought comfort, dignity, and peace throughout Janet's final months.
Janet's life was a quiet testament to faith, service, and unconditional love. Her example will continue to bless all who knew her.
