Jason attended Visitation Grade School and graduated from Rockhurst High School in 1991. He later attended the University of Kansas in Lawrence. A passionate sports fan, Jason loved the Jayhawks and the Kansas City Chiefs and enjoyed attending games and events with family and friends.
Jason had a gift for connecting with people and was often drawn to those who needed encouragement. He openly shared both his struggles and his victories with the people he loved, offering honesty, empathy, and understanding. Some of his most cherished moments were spent on his brother Mike’s ranch, where life slowed down and he could step away from the pace of the city to enjoy the quiet and simplicity of the outdoors.
Known for his quick wit and sharp sense of humor, Jason could always be counted on for a well-timed joke, a spontaneous dance move, or a sarcastic comment that caught everyone off guard and left the room laughing.
Though he faced personal battles throughout his life, Jason continually returned to his faith in Christ as a source of strength. During difficult seasons, he found comfort in worship music and often shared his favorite praise songs with others, encouraging them in their own faith journeys.
Jason was preceded in death by his stepmother, Nellie Long, wife of Michael Long, Sr.
Jason is survived by his parents, Michael Long, Sr. of Westwood, KS, and Barbara Long of Overland Park, KS; his children, Cole Long of Charleston, South Carolina, and Lauren Long of Overland Park, KS; and his siblings Michael Long, Jr. (Vicki) of Kansas City, MO; Vince Long (Robin) of Overland Park, KS; Annemarie Smith (Cisco) of Roeland Park, KS; Audrey Janes (Austin) of Roeland Park, KS; and Alison Lagerstrom of Westwood, KS, along with seven nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Friday, March 20, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at McGilley State Line Chapel, 12301 State Line Road, Kansas City, Missouri. A short prayer service open to all will follow the visitation. A private family interment will take place afterward.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Welcome House of Kansas City: https://welcomehousekc.org/
Jason will be remembered for his humor, his honesty, and the encouragement he gave to others, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
“For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”
