She was born in Nashville, TN, on June 8, 1936, to Cecil Whelen and Louise Thompson. Jean was a devoted mother who cherished raising her four children: Cliff Copp, Mike Copp, Donna Gerstner, and Devon Copp.
Jean had a successful career in the banking industry, eventually becoming the Vice President of Trust at Trader's National Bank. She took great pride in helping families navigate their financial needs. After retiring, she dedicated her time to managing the gift shop at St. Luke's Plaza Hospital.
Among her many passions, Jean loved golfing, playing bridge, and actively participating in church activities. One of her most meaningful endeavors was working with the "Sudanese Lost Boys" through Christ Episcopal Church. There, she helped refugees who had escaped persecution as they adapted to their new lives in the United States, teaching them vital life skills such as cooking, managing a checkbook, and other aspects of American culture.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her dear sister, Dorothy Louise Leek, and her beloved husband, Edward Schmitt. She is survived by her four children, 15 grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren.
Jean’s loving spirit touched all who knew her, and she will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
The family will plan a celebration of life event in the spring.
