

John Adrian Barrera, 84 of Kansas City, MO, died peacefully on Sunday, Sept 21, 2014 at his home. Visitation will be 9-11 a.m. (Rosary at 10 a.m.)on Thursday at Sacred Heart-Guadalupe Church, 2601 Madison, KCMO. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial to follow in Mount St. Mary’s Cemetery, KCMO.
John was born on March 5, 1930 in North Kansas City to Manuel and Gerarda (Amador) Barrera. John proudly served in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict from 1948-1952. John owned John’s Barber Shop for 50 years. For many years he visited Nichols Lunch where he socialized with his friends and family.
He was very proud of the unique architecture of the home he built for his wife, Anna. John sang in the Overland Stage Barber Shop Quartet, the Sacred Heart-Guadalupe Choir and Forever Young choir at KU Landon Center. He was past commander of American Legion Post 609, life member of VFW Post 9997, and attended Don Bosco Center and Brookside Health Care Center.
John was appointed to the Missouri Governor’s Committee on Hispanic Affairs, a life long member of Sacred Heart-Guadalupe Church, school board member of Bishop Lillis High School, and was involved in his grandchildren’s t-ball leagues at Guadalupe Center. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna in 2008; sisters, Eleanor Lopez, Victoria Pacheco, Abbie Balderas, Rita Ortiz; twin brother, Benny; brothers, Andrew, Manuel Jr., Daniel, Richard, and Frank Barrera. He is survived by his daughters, JoAnnA Palacio (Fred Sr.), Patricia Murillo (Thomas Sr.), Diana Cervantes (Peter Sr.), Maria C. Barrera; 5 grandsons, 4 granddaughters, and 3 great-grandchildren.
