

A graduate of O’Hara High School, John answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy. During his four years of service, he traveled the world, gaining experiences that would later influence his artistic perspective. Following his time in the Navy, he pursued his passion for art and earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Kansas City Art Institute.
John built a respected career as an accomplished illustrator, designer, and painter. His work appeared in a variety of newspapers and publications, and he authored, illustrated a published graphic novel, leaving behind a creative legacy that reflected both his talent and unique voice. As a freelance artist, he was known for his dedication to his craft and his ability to bring ideas to life with clarity and depth working for clients such as Hallmark and the Kansas City Star.
Beyond his professional achievements, John was a great brother and a constant, supportive presence in the lives of his nieces and nephews. He showed up for their activities, celebrated their milestones, and quietly offered encouragement and help whenever it was needed. Those who knew John will remember his calm, confident demeanor and his willingness to lend a hand without hesitation.
John is survived by his sister, Kathy Brill (Dan); his brothers, Robert (Frances) and James (Laurel); and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Rita Allison, and his brothers, Richard, Daniel, and Tom.
Service 10:00 am Saturday May 9, 2026, McGilley & Sheil Funeral home, Kansas City, Missouri. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment Mt Olivet Cemetery Kansas City, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John’s honor to The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
