They married October 28, 1949. John told Jeannette's dad, Ted, "don't worry about Jeannette, I love her and I will take care of her," and he did for 68 years. They resided in Westwood, Kansas. John always made sure his wife got back to her home town to visit her family. They traveled through many snow storms to get to Iowa for Christmas. John always complimented Jeannette on all her dolls she made and other things she did. He thanked her every day for taking care of him.
John was a boilermaker for Local #83 for 76 years. John was an Army veteran of World War II. John was a handyman and shared his expertise with his son-in-law and grandsons. He liked to paint, work on cars, he could fix just about anything. He enjoyed watching the Kansas City Royals, K.C. Chiefs, Lawrence Welk, Wheel of Fortune and Joel Osteen on TV. All who knew John heard many stories. He loved to tell stories about his family, the Army and work. You often would catch him singing a song, singing to his family. After John retired he watched his grandson Bryan. He took him to the zoo, movies, Bryan's favorite motorcycle store, the stables to ride his pony. John and Bryan were well known at Winstead's and McDonald's on the Plaza. John loved animals. As a boy he and his brother Calvin would bring lost dogs home, kept them until they were claimed by their owners.
John had dogs, cats, rabbits and horses for his family. Once his daughter Dianna brought home a squirrel monkey. Instead of getting upset, he made a large cage for the monkey.
