John was born on January 22, 1933 to Herman Levi and Marjorie Faye (Bartles) Hewitt in rural Sugar Creek Township, Miami County, Kansas. John attended elementary school in a one-room schoolhouse in Jingo, Kansas. The schoolhouse burned when he was in the 6th grade and he transferred to Drexel, MO to finish his elementary/middle school years.
In 1947 John’s family moved to a farm outside of Adrian, MO. John attended high school in Adrian, MO; graduating with the class of 1950. Soon after graduation, John left the farm and headed for the “big city”. We often asked Dad why he left the farm and he would reply that he knew it was time to go when his father put lights on the tractor!
After arriving in the “big city”, John went to work for Broski Galvanizing in the Sheffield District of Kansas City, MO. On April 1, 1953, John was invited to join the Army by Uncle Sam himself. Off to Louisiana he went where he served out his enlistment term. John received an honorable discharge on March 31, 1955.
On August 18, 1955 John was united in marriage to Betty Lolene Garrison. John and Betty were the proud parents of six children. John joined the Kansas City, Missouri Fire Department in 1962 and proudly served until his retirement in December 1992.
John was preceded in death by his loving wife of 44 years, Betty L. Hewitt; oldest son, John Allen Hewitt; youngest son, Bryan Lee Hewitt; great-granddaughter, Aubree Grace Stolberg (2013); his parents, Herman and Faye Hewitt; brother, Warren L. (Willie) Hewitt, and his sisters, Marion S. Kunkel and Charlotte F. Gutshall.
John is survived by his children, Jeffrey S. Hewitt of Parkville, MO, Julie A. (Kevin) Martel of Kansas City, MO, Jeanne M. (Nicholas) Scott of Excelsior Springs, MO and Kelly K. Hewitt (Stuart Davis) of Olathe, KS. John’s legacy continues through his 14 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
