John Michael Marquardt, passed away peacefully in the early hours of November 14, 2019 after a lengthy and brave battle with cancer. He will be forever missed by many, especially the family and friends that surrounded, reminisced, and comforted him in his final days.
John was born on September 21, 1966. He was raised in Wyandotte, Kansas by Beverly Adams (deceased) and Roger Marquardt. He graduated from Washington High School in 1985. Soon after, he moved to the Kansas City area and managed for several different restaurants. While working in Blue Springs he formed friendships that he maintained for the rest of his life and met his future wife, Stacy Marquardt. John and Stacy were married May 1, 1992 and had three children, Jonathan, Ashley and Jakob.
Although John had several jobs over the years, those that knew him knew coaching was his passion. He started coaching boys basketball in 1996, but soon found his true calling when he switched to coaching girls. He influenced the lives of hundreds of girls both on and off the court and became life-long friends with many of the families.
John was the type of person that wherever he went, he ran into someone he knew. He was known as honest, witty, stubborn, hard-working, and a man of his word. Besides coaching, you could find him playing pool with his friends up at Bullseyes, trying new recipes in the kitchen, smoking on the grill, watching his Chiefs, Royals, or Missouri Tigers, or loving on his two dogs, George and Gracie. His spirit and the impact he had on people and the community will live on despite passing too soon.
John is preceded in death by his mother, Beverly Adams. He is survived by his father Roger Marquardt, his wife Stacy Marquardt, his children Jonathan Michael Marquardt Jr. (JJ), Ashley Marquardt, and Jakob Marquardt, his siblings Adam Robe, Lori Wegener, Hollie Hubbard and Brian Marquardt, and the light of his life- his grandson Grayson Michael King.
A visitation will be held on Friday, November 22, 2019 from 4-7 pm. Previous basketball players and families are welcomed to wear a shirt or jersey from whichever team they played on of John’s.
A “Celebration of Life” will be held on Saturday, November 23rd, 2019 at 10 am. Both of these services will be held at Newcomers Floral Hills Funeral Home, 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64133. In lieu of flowers or gifts, John’s family asks donations to be made to the American Cancer Society in his memory.
Thank you.
