John H. Rys Sr., 91, passed away July 1, 2018 at Brookdale Rosehill Care Center in Shawnee, Kansas. He was born to Thomas and Anna Rys in Kansas City, MO and grew up on the eastside amongst family and friends. Upon graduation from East High at seventeen, he joined the Merchant Marines to serve his country during World War II. He was called once again, to serve in the Army during the Korean War as a Corporal. In honor of his service, he received the Korean Service Medal with four bronze service stars. He was also decorated with the United Nations Service Medal Meritorious Unit Commendation.
After leaving the service, he attended Finley College while working and graduated with an Electrical Engineering Degree. After graduation, he married the love of his life Virginia Krawczyk and they had two children: John Jr. and Cheryl.
He had a wonderful career and was gainfully employed by Western Electric, Black & Vetch and the Federal Aviation Administration, from which he retired. He was also the co-owner of KC Home Trailer Company Inc. for 40 years.
During his younger years, John loved to camp, fish and hunt with his family. He also enjoyed gardening and projects. He was a master at fixing mechanical and electrical equipment. His skills came in handy and he volunteered his services at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church and helped others in the community. He was also a dedicated son and brother who cared for his aging parents and later his sister.
John Sr. was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Wanda Rys. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Virginia of the home; John Jr. and Denese Rys of Independence, Missouri and Cheryl and Ron Peters of Shawnee, Kansas. He has five grandchildren, Sara, Emma and Michael Rys and Matthew and Caroline Peters. In addition, he has four great grandchildren, Gatlinn, Brian, Justice and Carter.
On Thursday, July 5, 2018 visitation will be held from 6-8pm with the Rosary recited at 7pm at the McGilley & Sheil Chapel, located at 11924 E. 47th Street, Kansas City, Missouri. On July 6, 2018, the mass for a Christian Burial will be held at 11am at Nativity of Mary Catholic Church, located at 10010 E. 40 Highway, Independence, Missouri with visitation held one hour before the mass. Following the mass, burial will take place at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
