

Joseph Eugene Johannes, 85, Gladstone, passed away peacefully at NorthCare Hospice House on December 20, 2013. The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 27, at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church, located at 4737 N. Cleveland Ave., followed by the burial at Resurrection North Cemetery in Kansas City, Mo. The family will receive guests at the church on Thursday, December 26, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Born in Salina, Kansas, on January 31, 1928, to Joseph John and Mary Iva Johannes, Joe entered the Army at age 18. Upon his return, he graduated from St. Benedict’s College. He married Margaret Mary “Peaches” Wolters on July 19, 1952. The two enjoyed 61 years of life together.
Joe worked for 37 years at Commerce Bank, retiring in 1993 as a vice president. A charter member of St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church, he was active in Knights of Columbus and the American Legion; he was also a Life Member of Robert Morris Associates.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Donald Johannes, his sister, Barbara Ann Johannes and a daughter, Mary Theresa Moore. Survivors include his wife, Peaches, his sister, Sarah Kathleen Johannes, daughters, Julie (Larry) Arthur, Sara (Scott) Brown, Barbara Nemechek, Martha Johannes, Margaret (Sam) Cangelosi, sons, Joseph E. (Cindy) Johannes, Jr., John “Chris” ( Gail) Johannes, Philip (Laura) Johannes and son in law, Ed Moore, as well as 22 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Dad’s legacy is a large, loving family---a family by whom he will be dearly missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Gabriel Catholic Church.
