Joe was born on Nov. 17, 1924, and died some 87 years later on July 17, 2012, after a brief history of cancer. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 11822 Holmes, Kansas City, Mo., with a memorial mass following at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Our Lady of Mercy Country Home, 2115 Maturana Dr., Liberty, MO 64068, or to Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO 64145, or a charity of your choice . Joe was preceded in death by his much loved wife of 60 years, Patricia; his parents, James and Helen McNerney; a brother, James and a sister, Cecelia. He is survived by his daughter, Nancy McNerney, grandchildren, Kenneth Gunter, wife Holly, and Lori Neely, husband Reggie, and great-grandchildren, Nicolas and Nina Gunter and Justin and Harrison Neely. Joe grew up in St. James parish, attending St. James grade school and graduating from Paseo High School in 1943. The following year he joined the Merchant Marines and for the next four years sailed around the world providing fuel, equipment and supplies to England, Russia and our other allies. He carried his Able Seaman card for the rest of his life -- he was very proud of his service with the Merchant Marines. Joe was able to bridge the gap between Union and Management: He was a 65 year member of the Pipefitters Union Local 533 and during those same years worked for US Engineering for 33 of them achieving the office of Vice President. Joe was totally devoted to both -- recognizing that everyone's best interest depended upon a good and fair working relationship. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Joe enjoyed hunting and fishing, particularly with his two friends named Bob. He will be remembered for always helping anyone in need and his unique sense of humor will be missed.
