Judith J. Middleton Swope

Judith J. “Judy” Swope, 72, passed away May 8, 2014. Visitation will be from 6 – 8 PM Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Floral Hills Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10 AM Friday, May 16, 2014 at the funeral home with burial following in Odessa Cemetery. Judy was a lifelong K.C., MO resident. She graduated from Southeast High School, Class of 1959 and attended junior college and the University of Kansas. In 1965, she married James A. Swope and they were married 21 years until his death in 1986. She worked as a data processor for Beta Sigma Phi for 29 years. Judy then served two terms as a Kansas City Councilwoman from 1991 -1999 where she chaired the Rules and Audit, Operations and Aviation and Finance committees. She also served on various boards for city business. Judy served as co-chair of Southern Committees Coalition and president of Missouri Municipal League. She also served on the executive board of the Mid-America Regional Council; was a member of Total Transportation; co-chair of Air Quality Control; member of GFWC Homemakers Club of Hickman Mills, MO. Judy loved playing bridge and was a member of many chapters. Judy was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, James G. Middleton. Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Patricia Middleton and family; a daughter, Kim Scherer; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
