Karen Valerie Pruitt

Karen was born on January 22, 1945, in Ironton, Missouri, to James and Lorene Buford. She spent her childhood in Topeka, Kansas, and West Des Moines, Iowa, before settling in Kansas City. Karen graduated from Southeast High School, where she met the love of her life, William Edward “Eddie” Pruitt. The couple shared 56 wonderful years together before Eddie’s passing on July 10, 2017.

A loving wife and mother, Karen devoted her life to her family, always putting them first. She worked alongside Eddie for many years, managing the home office of their successful custom home-building business, where she handled contracts and kept the business running smoothly.

Karen had a deep love for her plants and many family pets throughout the years. She had an impressive greenhouse and menagerie as her green thumb and care for living things brought joy to her life and to those around her.

Karen’s younger brother, Mike Buford, who shared her January 22 birthday and was three years her junior, also preceded her in death.

She is survived by her four children: Bill Pruitt, Jim Pruitt (Diana), Dan Pruitt (Wendy), and Chloe Simms (Ed). Karen also leaves behind five beloved grandchildren: Henry, Max, and Charlie Simms, Zach Pruitt and Gia Pruitt.

Karen’s warmth, dedication, and compassion were felt by all who knew her. She will be remembered for her boundless love, her devotion to family, and the legacy of care she leaves behind.

A private family service will be held on Monday, December 16, 2024, at 5:00 PM, followed by an open visitation at 5:30 PM at McGilley State Line Chapel, 12301 State Line Road, Kansas City, MO 64145.
