(December 17, 1923 – February 16, 2018)
Kathryn Lee Royer Axon, passed away, peacefully, with family by her side, on February 16, 2018 at the Kansas City Hospice House. (Special thank you to The St Luke’s East Cardiologist, the Hospitalist, and the Kansas City Hospice House for their care and compassion).
She was born Kathryn Lee Royer on December 17, 1923 in Coffeyville, Kansas, and was one of four children. Brothers Kenneth, Keith and sister Joann. Kathryn’s parents and siblings preceded her in death.
Kathryn moved to Kansas City with her family at the age of 5. She graduated from Ruhl Hartman High School in 1942. There she played girls basketball, was a reporter for the high school newspaper, and editor of the yearbook. She was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Harold Lee Axon on July 14, 1943. She had three loving children, Kathy Timbrook (friend Claude Lafler) Lees Summit, Missouri, Steve Axon (Ginny), Denver, Colorado and Doug Axon, Durango, Colorado. Kathryn was a proud grandmother to 7 grandchildren: Bryan Timbrook, Overland Park, Kansas, Kara Timbrook, Lake Lotawana, Missouri, Mike (Maureen) Axon, New Canaan, Connecticut, Christa Anne (Matt) Tally, Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Jennifer (Mark) Lange, Colorado Springs, Colorado, Chris Axon, Kansas City, Missouri and Matt (Danielle) Axon, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was also a very proud great-grandmother to 14 greats (ages 2 to 24) Alix, Claudia, Zach, Jacob, Samantha, Alexis, Matt, Ryan, Sam, Isabella, Aaron, John, Kyleigh, and Chloe.
Kathryn was the ‘office manager’ for the accounting firm that she and husband Harold owned from 1951 until they retired in 1985. In 1985, they moved to the Lake of the Ozarks where she could enjoy so many of her hobbies. She loved knitting, crocheting, quilting, bird watching, cooking, fishing and genealogy. She and husband Harold traveled all over the world including all 50 state in the U.S., all of the Canadian providences including the Arctic Circle and Arctic Ocean, all over Mexico and Europe and more. They hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon twice and took the mules to the bottom twice. They were snowbirds from 1986-2015 spending winters in Mesa, Arizona. There she learned wood carving, doll making, took Spanish classes and loved hiking in the desert. They were past members of Colonial Presbyterian Church and transferred their membership to the Ozark Chapel United Methodist Church in Laurie, Missouri.
In 2015, Kathryn and Harold sold their home at Lake of the Ozarks and moved to Lees Summit to be closer to family. According to loved ones, she was the family rock. Wife, Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma - she was loving and kind, and helpful to all. She taught her granddaughters to cook, crochet and knit (but none have mastered beyond row 7). She taught strangers to smile. She never had an unkind word for anyone or anything. She loved nature, family and the Bible. She read the Bible from cover to cover five times and lived a life that was according to those pages. Kathryn made a special note referring to Matthew 4:7
