Born on June 9, 1938, to Clifford and Beryl (Gannaway) Jones, Lannie joined the Marine Corps in May 1957 and served for four years, during the period between the Korean and Vietnam wars. He came back to Kansas City in 1961, where he remained for the next 60+ years. A mechanic to his core, Lannie could fix or build just about anything with parts, gears, or wires. He had a mind built for problem-solving. Many of his children’s memories were of time spent in the garage watching him work, learning how to understand engines and self-reliance.
Lannie was a stoic, blunt man who didn’t often wear his emotions on his sleeve. But beneath that hard exterior was a deep love for his family, shown not through words, but through actions: a repaired car, a favor done quietly, a ride offered without hesitation.
He loved NASCAR, the Kansas City Chiefs, the morning newspaper, strong coffee, the occasional bourbon, and anything loud, fast, or mechanical. He wasn’t one to pretend to be nicer, gentler, or easier than he was, and that was part of his charm. He was real, and those who loved him wouldn’t have wanted him any other way.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Dwight Jones.
He is survived by his children, Scott Jones of Kansas City, Missouri; Mark Baylie of Tucson, Arizona; Leea (Stuart) Clark of Peculiar, Missouri; and Jori (Brett) Robinson of Severna Park, Maryland; six grandchildren, Megan Jones, Justin Jones, Kory (David) Lilley, Kiernan Robinson, Grayson Robinson, and Roarke Robinson; five great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Deanne Jones; six nieces and nephews; and sixteen great-nieces and nephews.
He will be deeply missed for his rare but genuine smile, his steady reliability, and yes, even his cantankerous attitude.
A visitation and funeral service will be held on Friday, November 14, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 2400 E US Hwy 50, Lee’s Summit, MO. Burial will immediately follow at Floral Hills East Memorial Gardens, 25203 E US Hwy 50, Lee’s Summit.
For those who want to send flowers have them sent to Grace United Methodist.
