

Larry graduated from Manuel High School in Kansas City. He completed 2 years of college and 8 years of trade school. He joined the Air Force and served in Japan and Spain throughout his 8 years of enlistment, during which time he became a Staff Sargent. After leaving the Air Force, Larry worked for Montgomery Wards as a service technician for 30 years. He then worked 7 years for Jackson County Sheriff’s maintenance department and afterwards co-owned Raytown Health Food Store with his wife, Ruby.
In August of 1957, Larry married the love of his life, Ruby, who preceded him in death. They were married for 56 years. Larry is survived by his 4 children and their spouses; 2 sons: Larry (Karen) Don (Cindy) and 2 daughters Sandra Scroggins (Steve), Linda Hetzel (Shannon). He is also survived by a multitude of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; as well as 3 siblings (David, Deanna, and Cheryl) and many nieces and nephews.
Larry loved to make people happy by being a part of their lives. He enjoyed camping with his family and going to Silver Dollar City. Larry loved having his grandchildren a part of his life taking them on trips and outings for their birthdays. Larry enjoyed watching the Kansas City Chiefs play.
Larry was very involved in various churches. He was a Sunday School teacher, a youth worker driving teens to church camp and various other activities and worked in a bus ministry bringing children to church and providing meals for them. He also helped in several large construction projects: The Barn, a teen center in Raytown for youth to have a fun spot to gather, play ping pong, talk, and have Bible Studies; and The Miracle Building, an addition to the church for a Christian School in Raytown. Larry enjoyed helping the helpless, he was involved in a ministry to the homeless in downtown Kansas City called The Harbor. He was also involved in the Boy Scouts with his sons and Camp Fire Girls with his daughters.
Every where Larry went, no matter where he lived or what hospital he was in, it was constantly said “Your dad is the nicest person we ever met!” Larry left us a lasting legacy of showing how to love other people and he said “I did not leave any monetary value, only my love. Love each other and take care of each other.”
A visitation for Larry will be held Wednesday, August 23, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Newcomer's Floral Hills Funeral Home, 7000 BLUE RIDGE BLVD, KANSAS CITY, MO 64133. A funeral service will occur Wednesday, August 23, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, 7000 BLUE RIDGE BLVD, KANSAS CITY, MO 64133. A committal service will occur Wednesday, August 23, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM, 7000 BLUE RIDGE BLVD, KANSAS CITY, MO 64133.
