January 11, 1935 – October 1, 2026
LaVaughn Howland, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2026. Her life was defined by devotion to her family, a generous spirit, and a deep well of creativity. She was preceded in death by her husband of 71 remarkable years, Walter, who passed in September 2025.
Born and raised in Wichita, Kansas, LaVaughn graduated from high school there before marrying the love of her life, Walter, on September 6, 1954. Together they built a life grounded in partnership, laughter, and unwavering commitment.
LaVaughn was the proud and loving mother of five children: Sheryl (Joe) Medina of Lee’s Summit, MO; Janis (David) Lembke of Olathe, KS; Matt (Shawn) Howland of Troy, IL; Tracy (Pat) Peterson of Ridgecrest, CA; and Kristin Goetz of Pensacola, FL.
Her legacy continues through seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, each of whom she cherished deeply and celebrated wholeheartedly.
She is also survived by her brother Ronald Hand, and nephew Russell (Cindy) Hand and niece Mona (Serafin) Avitia, and families.
Having lost her own mother at the age of three, LaVaughn poured her heart into motherhood. She often said she wanted enough children for a baseball team—until she reached five and joyfully declared her roster complete. She was the center of the family, a devoted homemaker who made every holiday feel magical. Her home cooked meals brought everyone together, and her legendary turkey gravy became a cherished tradition.
LaVaughn embraced life with enthusiasm. She loved socializing, playing cards, and spending time with friends. She enjoyed tennis and golf, and she nurtured her artistic side with art lessons at the Kansas City Turners club. She supported every activity her children pursued—gymnastics, dance, swimming, and countless sports—always present, always encouraging.
Family vacations were another of her gifts. She made them memorable by encouraging everyone to contribute to the family journal, creating treasured keepsakes that captured the laughter, adventures, and togetherness of those trips.
Art was one of LaVaughn’s greatest passions. For decades she painted in acrylics and watercolors, always working on her next piece. She took pride in creating something special for each grandchild and great grandchild, leaving behind a collection of heartfelt, handmade memories.
LaVaughn’s life was one of love, creativity, and devotion. She will be remembered for her warmth, her humor, her artistic spirit, and the way she made every person in her family feel deeply loved.
Services will be held on Monday, October 12, 2026 at McGilley State Line Chapel, 12301 State Line Road, Kansas City, MO. Visitation will be from 10:30-11:00 AM, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 AM.
