Dr. Layton L. McCoy

Layton Leslie McCoy, 93, of Kansas City, MO died November 13 2020. Services are to be held privately. Burial at floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
Layton was born in Seattle, Washington, to Lena Newton McCoy and Leslie Layton McCoy, MD on March 11th, 1927. He grew up in Seattle and attended K-12, Seattle public schools. Layton obtained a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Washington.
At the age of 24, Layton moved to New York City where he assumed a position in the chemistry Department of Columbia, University. Layton served in the US Army until he retired due to an injury received during basic training. This injury left home 80% disabled. He spent the next year completing a post doctoral position at UW re-training himself in the field of chemistry. Layton returned to Columbia University where he taught and worked on his research and participated in graduate student supervision. Afterwards he moved to Kansas City and continued the remainder of his career teaching and advising graduate students at UMKC for the next thirty years. In the course of his teaching and doing research he received several honors.
He became a life-time member of the American Chemical Society, he was a member at Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, Kappa Lambda Upsilon, Fellow of AAAS, chairman of UMKC Chemistry Department, retired as Professor Emeritus. Layton married Elizabeth Ann Mc Coy on August 3, 1966. They were blessed with two sons and four grandchildren.
Layton is survived by his wife, of 54 years, Ann; son Lincoln L. McCoy and wife Amy McCoy; son Jason Andrew McCoy and wife Dawn McCoy; granddaughter Lauren Leslie McCoy; grandson Victor Andrew McCoy; grandson Jacob Dennis McCoy; and grandson Wyatt Samuel McCoy. A brother, Lincoln Lowell McCoy predeceased him. In lieu of flowers, Layton would have been pleased that contributions be sent with a note designating the LeRoy Pogemiller Scholarship Fund to UMKC Foundation, Room 220.
