From June 6, 1934, until her death, Lois nurtured the people around her with love, faith, and humor. She was born in a sod house in Shaw, Colorado to Francis and Maye (Chandler) Burgess, and was the second of three children. She graduated Valedictorian from Elbert High School in Colorado. Lois lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures: chatting with friends and family, caring for those around her, and spending quality time with those she loved. She was truly gifted at adding humor and joy to some of life’s most trying circumstances.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father; sister Donna Mae Homer and brother Richard Eugene Burgess; daughter Susan Diane Vandervoort and son-in-law Donald Lynn Bird; and her grandson, Kyle Mortensen. Left to honor Lois' memory are her three children, Sheila Bird, Brenda (Kelly) Mortensen, and Marvin (Janice) Vandervoort; seven grandchildren, Justin Bird, Jessica (Dave) Bird Beza, Jeremy (Christin) Bird, Julie (Brenton) Bird, Cody (Kelsey) Mortensen, Ashley Vandervoort, and Chelsea Vandervoort; four great-grandchildren, Matthew Bird, Levi Bird, Caiden Bird, and Callan Bird.
Lois will be remembered as a bright and shining light by her family, friends and all who knew her. Everyone valued her deeply for her quiet demeanor, skillful listening, joy, gentleness & guidance.
Lois’ ashes will be buried back home in Colorado Springs between her Mama and Daddy. Lois lived a resilient life, surviving multiple life-threatening illnesses, including being a two-time survivor of cancer. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation in Lois’ honor to the American Cancer Society. Condolences can be sent to the family in care of the McGilley Antioch Chapel. As she walked through the pearly gates, we are sure she greeted Saint Peter, “It is what it is.”
