Loren grew up in the Northeast part of Kansas City, MO. As a child, he attended Gladstone Elementary and Northeast Jr. High School. He then attended Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, MO, graduating in 1947. He then attended College at William Jewell in Liberty, MO, where he studied music.
Loren developed his passion for music in grade school and began playing the trumpet. He was an accomplished musician and singer. Besides playing the trumpet, Loren also played the piano, french horn, and auto-harp. While attending Wentworth, Loren was a member of the Marching Band and Dance Band. At William Jewell, Loren, along with three others, formed their first ever band. He continued in Dance Band at William Jewell, traveling to various local high schools and performing at Proms. He was also a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity Quartet.
Throughout his adult life, Loren's passion for music continued. He sang in multiple choirs and Barber Shop Quartets. He was a member of the Barber Shop Quartet "Kansas City Serenaders," that traveled throughout Kansas and Missouri performing. The group appeared on the "Ted Mac Amateur Hour Show" and finished in second place. All through his life, Loren continued to entertain family and friends with his music. He was playing the piano and singing until a week prior to his passing. When Loren was not singing or playing an instrument, he was telling jokes. He loved his: "Did you hear about. . .?" jokes.
Loren's career began as a paste-up artist for his father. He then went into Real Estate at J.C. Nichols. In 1978, Loren went to work for Columbian Title Insurance Co., and later Columbian Bank as a courier. He retired in 2008 at age 78.
Loren's hobbies included: golfing, caricature drawing, fishing, traveling, and bowling with many friends, father, and wife.
Loren is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; step-children, Carmelle Lowe (Dannie), John Enright, Jr. (Jennifer); grandchildren, Matthew, Elizabeth, Austin, Jordan, Brady; great-grandson Colt; sister, Patricia Barnes; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents Merritt and Pauline Powles, and his brother, Merritt Powles, Jr.
