Luther Alan Johnson, 92, of Stephen, MN, died peacefully December 28, 2023, at St. Luke’s South Hospital in Overland Park, Kansas. Luther was born to the late Agnes Theodora and Carl Alphonse Emanuel Johnson on June 19, 1931. He graduated from Stephen High School in Stephen, MN, and attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. Luther married Carol Ann Engelstad in 1951, and together they moved to rural Stephen where they farmed and reared two children, Deborah and Nathan. Luther and Carol traveled to Bullhead City, AZ, in the winters during their marriage of nearly 61 years and Luther continued to meet there with much loved friends after Carol’s passing in 2012. No matter what though, sometime in March, Lute would be “antsy” to be back with his lifelong community and much loved family farm. He was active in church and community organizations and served as Chair of the Minnesota Rural Water Board for several years. St. Petri Lutheran, and later First Lutheran Church, were central to his faith and source of strength throughout the years. Luther will be missed for his bright smile, wit, great stories and sharp mind and for all the love he shared with his family and friends. He will be dearly missed by family and friends. Luther is survived by two children: Deborah Johnson, Sarona, WI; Nathan (Jenny) Johnson, Overland Park, KS; three grandchildren: Natalie (Tyler) Martin, Highlands Ranch, CO; Nicole (Brendan) O’Malley, Mercer Island, WA; Natasha (Jacob) Gray, Hermosa Beach, CA; and six great grandchildren: Jessa (8), Mallory (6), Kellen (4) Martin; Declan (6), Lochlan (4), Callaghan (2) O’Malley. Luther is preceded in death by his wife, Carol Ann Johnson; his parents Agnes Theodora Thorkildson Johnson and Carl Alphonse Emanuel Johnson; and his siblings Wallace A. (Joyce Moen Johnson) Johnson, Carl T. (Betty Schroeder Johnson) Johnson, Verona J. (Clarence Peterson) Peterson, and Mary A. Johnson; and many nieces, nephews and their families. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, February 17, 2024 at First Lutheran Church, 573 Stephen Ave, Stephen, MN 56757.
