Margaret Garner Gustin, 83, died on April 26, 2015 in Kansas City, Missouri surrounded by her loving family. Peggy, as she was known to her friends, was born on February 21, 1932, the daughter of James Lyndon Garner and Katherine McCune Garner of Louisiana, Missouri. She attended Sweet Briar College in Virginia and the University of Missouri where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. Peggy married Albert Lyman Gustin, III on February 6, 1954, and moved to Kansas City where Bert was affiliated with the Gustin-Bacon Manufacturing Co.
Known for her bright blue eyes, knowing smile, elegant style and gracious manners, Peggy was a devoted community volunteer, mother and grandmother. Her service included chairing the 1990 Jewel Ball, membership in the Westport Garden Club and Junior League of Kansas City, volunteering at Children’s TLC, and a long-standing member of both the Kansas City Country Club and the River Club.
In addition to her Kansas City community, Peggy had three loves: traveling, reading, and -most of all- her family. Peggy was a travel pioneer, whose interest was generational when she began exploring the globe with her mother-in-law, Hettie Gustin. In the decades to follow, Peggy introduced her grandson, Hunter, daughter, Lyndon, and son-in-law, Rick, to cultures around the world with no intent of slowing down. When not jetting off, Peggy spent many holidays at her beach home in Boca Grande, Florida entertaining close friends and family, reading medieval mysteries, and playing bridge. Peggy took a particular delight when her grandson, Hunter, moved back to Kansas City this spring.
Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Lyman Gustin, III in 1986. She is survived by her brother, James L. Garner, Jr. (Hjordis Barr); her daughter, Lyndon Gustin Chamberlain; son-in-law, Richard Hunter Chamberlain; grandson, Hunter Gustin Chamberlain; and her close friend, Sandy Lambert. Peggy’s quick wit will be missed not only by her family, but by her many lifelong friends and travel companions.
Peggy’s family would like to extend special thanks to her caregivers, Carla, Pasha, Candy and especially Donna.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28th in the chapel at Bishop Spencer Place, 4301 Madison Ave., Kansas City, MO 64111.
