Peggy was born in Olean, New York, to John J. “Jack” and Marie Emma O’Haire (Roach). She spent her childhood in Burlington and Elgin, Illinois, graduating from Elgin High School. She graduated from the College of St. Teresa in Winona, Minnesota, where she met her husband, Bernie Kersting. After their marriage on September 3, 1966, in Elgin, they started their family in Kansas City. She later moved to East Troy, Wisconsin, where she started her career as a clerk for the United States Postal Service. Later, she moved to Signal Mountain, where she retired, then moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, and Kansas City to be closer to her grandchildren.
Peggy enjoyed playing bridge with friends, watching Jeopardy, swimming, and providing a second home for what felt like dozens of neighborhood children. She was proud of volunteering for John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign in high school, and remained a lifelong Democrat. She served as President of the East Troy PTO, believing strongly in the importance of quality public education. Peggy competed in mini-triathlons, and was excited to be the oldest finisher on one occasion.
Peggy is survived by her children, Topher (Shaby) of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Jay of Henderson, Nevada, and Dan (Lulu) of Overland Park, Kansas; grandchildren Alex (Sam), Ben, Will, Zari, Stephi, and Xavier; brother John (Claudia) of Elgin; and her dog, Waffles. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernie, of 50 years; her parents; brothers Tom and Michael; sisters Mary Ann and Sheila; and Jay’s lower left leg below the knee (and your sense of humor if that offends you).
