Maria Wilcox

December 17, 1929June 7, 2021

Maria Wilcox, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away June 7, 2021 at her home. She was 91 years old. Maria was born in the town of Iglau in the Czech Republic. During World War II, Maria and her family were forced to leave their family farm in the Czech Republic and walk to Vienna, Austria, traveling under cover of darkness and relying on farmers to share their food along the way. Later Maria’s family was forced to reside in a refugee camp, and finally they caught the last refugee train to West Germany where her family settled. As a young woman, Maria worked in the snack bar on the U.S. Army Base in Germany where she met her husband, Robert Francis Wilcox, a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army. Maria and her husband had two sons, Richard and Robert. Together, their family lived in Germany multiple times, as well as Tennessee, Arkansas, Virginia, and Missouri.

Maria had a great love of animals and over the years, she and her family cared for many dogs, cats, cows, horses, hummingbirds, and peacocks. Maria was also a talented seamstress and she enjoyed sewing dolls for a shop in Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri. Maria enjoyed cooking many dishes, including Goulasch and other German foods. She also loved baking cakes and pies for her family and friends, and she mastered the art of making a perfect pie crust. Maria had a great sense of humor and she loved talking to people and travelling. More than anything, Maria loved her family. We will miss her.

Maria was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Francis Wilcox and her sister Elizabeth Chalupa. Survivors include her sons Rick Wilcox (Ellen Wilcox), Bob Wilcox, her grandchildren Madelyne and Sarah, and many other dear relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held on June 25, 2021 at 1 p.m. at the home of Bob Wilcox. In lieu of flowers, please submit memorials to the ASPCA.
