

Marian Louise Johnson passed away peacefully in her home on May 5. Marian was born in 1917 to Marvin Arthur and Mary Louise Nichols in their home in Mankato, MN. Growing up in Mankato, Marian took an interest in cooking at an early age. She attended Iowa State University where she got a degree in Home Economics in 1939. Marian then took a job as a demonstrator cook with the Gas Service Company in Minneapolis. She met her husband on a blind date with her roommates brother. J Donald Johnson and Marian were married in 1942 and had 39 wonderful years together until Don died in 1981. They raised 7 children while moving around with Don’s job with General Mills with stops in MN, IA, OH back to MN, then TN and finally Kansas City in 1965. After getting all the children through grade school, Marian went back to school and eventually got her Masters in Education. She then taught first grade in the Park Hill School District until she retired in 1988. In her retirement years Marian enjoyed bridge, dulcimers, gardening, reading, sewing, baking bread, exercise and volunteering for Childrens Mercy Hospital. She has been a Methodist most of her life and has attended Sunday services at some church her entire life. She was preceded in death by her husband Donald Johnson, her sister Helen Wood and grandson Mark Johnson. She is survived by daughter Sallie Stockdill and husband John of Tampa, FL; son Bernard Johnson and wife Dr. Maria Capaldo of Manhattan Beach, CA; daughter Barbara McLaughlin and husband Mark of Milwaukee, WI; son Marvin Johnson and wife Josyln Slaughter of Seattle, WA; son David Johnson and wife Leah of Vicksburg, MS; Son Chris Johnson and wife Kathy of Bristow, VA; son Doug Johnson and wife Janet of Kansas City, MO, 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. The family suggests contributions in lieu of flowers to either: Childrens Mercy Hospital 2401 Gillham Road, Kansas City, MO 64108 or Platte Woods United Methodist Church, 7310 NW Prairie View Road, Kansas City, MO 64151. Visitation will be held on Thursday May 10, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at McGilley Antioch Chapel 3325 NE Vivion Road Kansas City, MO 64119. Funeral Service will be on Friday May 11 at 10 AM at Platte Woods United Methodist Church, with interment immediately following service at White Chapel Cemetery. (www.mcgilleyantiochchapel.com)
