At ten days of age she was welcomed as the first daughter of Paul and Evelyn Bowman, and sister to Rick. She grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, spent her elementary years in Quincy, IL, before moving to Merriam, Kansas, with her family in time for her high school years at Shawnee-Mission North. During her senior year she shared her room and activities with our German exchange student, Ruth Wieneke.
Preceding her in death were a brother Douglas, a sister Debora, and her father Dr. Paul Hoover Bowman. Surviving are her mother Evelyn of Lakeview Village, Lenexa, her husband, James of Kansas City, a brother Richard Bowman (Judith) of Tucson, Arizona, a nephew Paul Henley Bowman of Tulsa, Oklahoma, a niece Katherine Berman (Jeremy), and two grand-nieces, Zalia and Orli of Seattle, Washington, plus many cousins.
Being a child of the 60’s and 70’s she was influenced by the hippie culture and the Vietnam War. During her college years at the University of Kansas, she was elected vice-president of the student body on an anti-war platform. which changed her life for a time. Following an anti-war protest on campus she, along with some 40 others was suspended from school for six months. An enlightened president rescued her and brought her back to campus. She resumed her job as vice-president and finished her undergraduate education. After graduation she worked at a variety of jobs in K.C., MO, and spent a summer in Mexico with her sister studying Spanish before deciding on her next challenge-- enrolling at Dartmouth to earn an MBA.
Seventeen years in Hawaii, first as an employee of a large firm, then in her own business as a tax accountant was a dream come true. In 1995, as the dream changed, she and James Pompey, her future husband, returned to Kansas City and made their home here. She worked at a legal firm for a year or two before cancer invaded her life and she became a full-time homemaker. She loved antiques, gardening and animals.
