Born on December 7, 1933, to Jerry and Mary Ellen (Andrews) Carrigan, Marilyn grew up in Kansas City and attended St. Teresa’s Academy. She graduated from St. Teresa’s College (now Avila University) in 1955 with a degree in Education.
A devoted Catholic, Marilyn lived her faith daily and shared its values through her lifelong work as an educator. She taught in the Catholic Diocese of Kansas City–St. Joseph for over 30 years, inspiring generations of students with her kindness, patience, and belief in the goodness of others.
In 1957, Marilyn married the love of her life, Tom Fennesy, and together they shared 57 years of marriage until Tom’s passing in 2014. They were blessed with four children and a life filled with laughter, faith, and adventure. Marilyn and Tom especially loved their travels to Ireland, the Holy Land, and Rome, journeys that deepened both their faith and their appreciation for the world.
Above all, Marilyn cherished her family. She was a devoted and loving mother to Vince (Danette), Jerry (Amy), Jack, and Nancy Monaghan (Mike); a proud grandmother to Tommy Fennesy, Donny (Tori) Fennesy, Jaime Fennesy, Kyle (Erin) Fennesy, Patti Fennesy, Sean Fennesy, Coleman (Rachel) Fennesy, Katie Lindgren (Joe), Marie Monaghan, and Sean Monaghan; and a joyful great-grandmother to Jim Lindgren, Nina Lindgren, Theodore Fennesy, and Daniel Fennesy. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her beloved husband Tom, her parents Jerry and Mary Ellen Carrigan, her sisters Geraldine Carrigan and Regina Howard, and her grandson Dan Fennesy.
Marilyn’s faith guided every step of her journey. Her warmth, humor, and compassion touched everyone she met. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother, and faithful servant of God.
