Marina was born on October 3, 1936 in Portsmouth, OH to Arthur and Mary (France) Tomlin and was the oldest of ten children. She graduated from Portsmouth High School and followed in her mother’s footsteps by becoming a registered nurse. Mother and daughter both graduated from Portsmouth’s Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Mary in 1931 and Marina in 1957. Marina completed her nurse’s training at The Ohio State University Medical Center. She continued her nursing career, while selflessly caring for her family. She was last employed as a nurse at North Kansas City Hospital, retiring in 1994 after nearly 20 years of service. She volunteered for many years at the ARC Thrift Store and the Manor Thrift Shop, benefitting persons with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Throughout her lifetime, Marina enjoyed tending her beautiful garden, bird watching, traveling, reading British mystery novels, doing crossword puzzles, and most of all spending time with her immediate and extended family. She was also a talented pianist. Her love of music was a gift that lives on in her children.
Marina married James O’Connor on August 8, 1959. They had four children and moved to the Kansas City area in 1975. James passed away in 1999, and Marina remained in their longtime home until October 2018. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Mary Lou Mari; her brother, Arthur Tomlin; and her grandson, Daniel O’Connor.
